âYOU THERE!â
The voice was deep, menacing, and regal. It was, after all, a roar.
Jeremy the cat peeked out from the shadows.
The largest lion sat on his haunches behind the protective glass of the observation hut.
âApproach!â
Jeremy inched forward.
âBack again?â
Jeremy bowed his head.
âYes, sir.â
âSir?â
Another lion joined them and pressed its muzzle against the glass by Jeremyâs head.
âItâs âYour Majestyâ to you!â said the second lion.
Another lion pounced down from a boulder.
âOr âSireâ!â
And yet another lion.
âKing of the beasts!â
Jeremy quaked with terror.
The largest lion relaxed and chuckled.
âNow, now, lions. Iâm sure our little friend meant no disrespect.â
âNo, SirYourMajestySire! I have nothing but respect for lions. I mean, gosh, all catsââ
âAll cats?â said the second lion, rising to full height.
âIs that what you are?â said the third lion.
âYes,â said Jeremy.
âSILENCE!â bellowed the largest lion.
The lion leaned closer to the glass and stared down at little Jeremy.
âOf course heâs a cat. Look at him,â said the lion.
All the lions stared intently at Jeremy. He shifted uncomfortably.
âA fine specimen of our noble breed. Are you not?â said the lion.
âI . . . I try?â
âStand up!â commanded the lion.
Jeremy leaped to attention.
âEars UP!â
Jeremyâs ears flicked up.
âThe royal bearing is evident.â
Jeremy swelled with pride.
The second lion sniffed. She moved closer to the window.
âYes. I see what you mean, Sire.â
âMost impressive,â added the third lion.
âA fine example,â offered the fourth.
Jeremy smiled.
Plum entered the observation hut, unnoticed by the lions or Jeremy.
âAnd now,â continued the biggest lion, âlet us hear your roar.â
Jeremy opened wide and let out his fiercest . . .
âMEEEEEEEOWWW!â
